Research Overview
The empirical existence and persistence of matriarchal societies illustrate that, in various civilisations in certain parts of the world, it is women who are at the centre of leadership and management processes. Yet, there appears to be a dearth of research on the role of matriarchal cultures in the organisation of matriarchal social formations, including in leadership studies. The research examines whether matriarchal cultures contain elements of opposition and thus may be involved in (counter)hegemonic discursive practices, and if so, how, why and with what consequences such resistant practices may be (re)produced in the face of significant patriarchal forces.
